ISIS: Anti-aircraft missiles able to shoot down passenger pl
Islamic State militants in northern Iraq have modern portable air defense systems that are capable of shooting down a passenger plane, according to a confidential report given by Germany's foreign intelligence agency, the BND, the members of parliament, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported.

Originally provided by Qatar and possibly Saudi Arabia to Syrian rebels, man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems like the Chinese FN-6 have apparently been acquired by the Islamic State.

Iraq’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that an Mi-35M attack helicopter was shot down near Bayji in Salah-al-Din province on October 3. Iraqi officials said a shoulder-fired missile also brought down a Bell 407 utility helicopter in the same area on October 8.

The maximum ranges and altitudes of portable air defense systems vary. Older systems can shoot down slower helicopters and gunships, but not commercial airplanes.

According to the New York Times, a major concern is that militants may acquire SA-24s, a more sophisticated system with a greater ability to hit moving targets such as a plane on its approach to a runway.

Airlines such as Austrian Airlines and Qatar Airways still fly over parts of northern Iraq that are controlled by the Islamic State, the New York Times reported.

Russian cruise missiles targeted at Syria crash into Iran in
IRAN ? Some cruise missiles that were targeted at Syria and launched from a Russian ship crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials said, according to a CNN report.

U.S. military and intelligence assets monitoring the situation concluded that at least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran, according to the report. U.S. damage assessments are also leading experts to believe that some buildings were damaged and civilians may have been hurt.

The Russian ships have been positioned in the south Caspian Sea, and have been firing a relatively new cruise missile called "Kaliber," using it for the first time in combat, according to CNN.

However, the Russian Defense Ministry is denying the missiles landed anywhere other than Syria.

"Unlike CNN, we don't report quoting anonymous sources, but we show launches of our missiles and the targets they hit in real-time mode," a statement on Facebook reads. "No matter how unpleasant and unexpected it is for our colleagues in the Pentagon and Langley, our strike yesterday with precision-guided weapons at ISIS infrastructure in Syria hit its targets."

Syrian army moves Scud missiles to avoid Western attack
Originally published on August 30, 2013

Several Scud missiles and dozens of launchers were removed from a base in north Damascus, Syria on August 29. The move was reported to protect the weapons from a Western attack.

According to Reuters, "The move from the position in the foothills of the Qalamoun mountains, one of Syria's most heavily militarised districts, appears part of a precautionary but limited redeployment of armaments in areas of central Syria still held by Assad's forces, diplomats based in the Middle East told Reuters.

"At the headquarters of the army's 155th Brigade, a missile unit whose base sprawls along the western edge of Syria's main highway running north from the capital to Homs, rebel scouts saw dozens mobile Scud launchers pulling out early on Thursday.

"Rebel military sources said spotters saw missiles draped in tarpaulins on the launchers, as well as trailer trucks carrying other rockets and equipment. More than two dozen Scuds - 11-metre (35-foot) long ballistic missiles with ranges of 300 km (200 miles) and more - were fired from the base in the Qalamoun area this year, some of which hit even Aleppo in the far north.

"Syrian military authorities do not discuss troop movements publicly. No government spokesman was available for comment."

North Korea vs South Korea: Kim Jong-un fires 2 missiles bef
North Korea fired two short-range missiles into the sea on Monday, in possible protest at the annual South Korea-U.S. military drill which it says is provocative and pushes the two Koreas toward war.

North Korea has escalated its rhetoric in recent days, saying that South Korea and the United States ‘should be dealt with only by merciless strikes’.

Two short-range missiles were fired from the western city of Nampo on Monday, according to the South Korean military.

The missiles travelled around 500 kilometres before falling into the sea off the eastern coast.

The missile test was conducted as the annual South Korea-United States joint military exercise began. Around 200,000 South Korean troops and 3,700 American soldiers are involved in the drill dubbed Foal Eagle.

North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests since 2006, but analysts believe it is unlikely for North Korea to carry out a fourth one protesting the annual military drill.

Syrian regime used thermobaric weapons: report
A UN investigation into the ongoing Syrian conflict has claimed that Syrian government forces have used thermobaric weapons. The report alleges that Syrian armed forces used such devices in Qusayr, a strategic town that they recently recaptured from rebels, on March 20.

Russia's thermobaric bomb, known as the 'father of all bombs', is a two-stage explosive weapon that uses fuel such as ethylene oxide to produce an intense fireball and devastating blast wave. The 7,100 kg device packs an explosion the equivalent of 44 tons of TNT and has a destructive radius of around 300 meters. The blast from a thermobaric weapon ruptures the vital organs of enemy personnel, literally sucking the air out of the lungs of those caught within the blast radius.

This animation explains how a thermobaric bomb works and its effects.

ISIS propaganda photo of baby with weapons, bombs and birth
The most recent example of ISIS using social media as a propaganda tool is this disturbing image of a newborn baby sleeping next to a handgun, a grenade, and what seems to be a birth certificate issued by the Islamic State.

Although the photo has yet to be verified as authentic, experts believe it is the first official evidence of a birth certificate being issued by the Islamic State group.

This is just the latest in a series of photos that have been attributed to ISIS showing children and infants posing alongside huge automatic weapons, and ISIS paraphernalia including flags, and signs.

The man who posted the latest photo on Twitter along with the warning "This child will be risk to you not just to us," is a member of an anti-ISIS group operating in Syria.

Doctor Clarke Jones, a terrorism expert from the Australian National[a] University is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "It's an interesting signal of life within the caliphate. Obviously by posting opposition to the Islamic State from within their borders the activist is operating with great risk."

Hezbollah anti-tank missile attack on Israeli border convoy
Two Israeli soldiers were killed in by in an anti-tank missile attack carried out by Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah on Wednesday in a disputed region at the Israel-Lebanon border.

Hezbollah leadership claimed responsibility for the latest incident near Israel's far-northern frontier, saying its Quneitra Martyrs Brigade struck the an Israel Defense Forces convoy at 11.35 a.m., the New York Times reported.

The IDF has said the convoy was travelling through the Shebaa Farms frontier region near Israel's far-northern border with Lebanon when the missile struck. Seven soldiers were wounded along with the two who were killed.

As Reuters reports, "the attack on Wednesday was the latest in a string of recent events along Israel's northern frontiers that have sharply escalated tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and that have raised the risk of broader confrontation.

"About an hour after the initial attack on the military convoy, several mortar shells were fired at Israeli military positions in the border area and on Mount Hermon in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, without causing injury.

"The Israeli military said it responded with combined aerial and ground strikes at what it called `Hezbollah operational positions' in Lebanon, and said that it might take further action.

"`At these moments, the I.D.F. is responding to events in the north,' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Twitter, referring to the Israel Defense Forces. `We will not allow terror elements to disrupt the lives of our citizens and threaten their security. We will know how to respond with force to whoever challenges us.'

"Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a spokesman for the Israeli military, described the events as a severe escalation on our northern border.' Military leaders convened in Tel Aviv to assess the situation."

Iran may modify Arak heavy water reactors to address nuclear
Originally published on February 6, 2014

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iran is willing to modify the heavy water reactors planned for Arak, its energy chief said in a statement on Thursday (February 6).

U.S. and European nonproliferation specialists fear that the Arak reactors could provide a supply of plutonium that can be used for the production of nuclear weapons.

"We can do some design change - in other words, make some change in the design in order to produce less plutonium in this reactor and in this way allay the worries and mitigate the concerns," Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said in an interview with Iran's official English-language Press TV.

Iran also says that its atomic program is dedicated to civilian energy and for medical uses. The reactors in Arak are intended to produce isotopes for treating cancer patients.

Experts suggest that converting the heavy water reactors to light reactors may pose less of a proliferation threat.

Heavy water reactors use water comprised of a heavier isotope of hydrogen, known as deuterium. In the reactor, uranium undergoes fission in a reactor rod, expelling two neutrons.

Deuterium in heavy water effectively slows down the neutrons, allowing it to be absorbed into uranium. With the release of two additional electrons, uranium is converted to plutonium.

Heavy water reactors can use raw uranium as fuel, and also produce more plutonium byproduct than light water reactors.

This animation shows the process involved.
